This year’s election season may not be as, uh, intense as last year, but Buncombe County does have 2 upcoming municipal elections that are open to Weaverville + Woodfin residents on Nov. 2, 2021. The last official day to register for these elections is Fri., Oct. 8, so let’s take a look at the key details of these upcoming races.
Who’s on the ballot?
- Weaverville’s Mayoral election has only 1 candidate: incumbent Patrick Fitzsimmons.
- Weaverville’s Town Council has 4 candidates and 3 seats: Catherine Cordell, Doug Jackson, Thomas P. Veasey II, and Michele Wood.
- Town of Woodfin Commissioners has 8 candidates and 3 seats: Ellen Brown, Jackie Bryson, Eric Edgerton, Debra Giezentanner, Don Hensley, Jim McAllister, Linwood Nichols, and Hazel Thornton.
- Town of Woodfin’s Sanitary Water and Sewer District Trustee election has 3 incumbent candidates running for its 3 seats: Ivo Ballentine, Sarah W. Gassaway, and Don Haynes.
Note: City of Asheville elections have been pushed to 2022 as a result of a new law that shifted Asheville City Council elections from odd-numbered years to even ones. Learn more.
To be eligible to vote, you must:
- Live in the Town of Weaverville, Town of Woodfin, or be a or be a Woodfin Water and Sewer customer.
- Register by Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. (if you’re a new voter).
- Have resided in your precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election.
- Provide either photo ID or documentation that verifies your current address.
How to vote:
- Absentee by mail: Request one here by Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. or, if you’re an active military member, by Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. Your ballot must be returned to the County or postmarked by Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.
- Early voting: Runs from Oct. 14-30 at the Election Services warehouse (50 Coxe Ave.). On Sat., Oct. 30, the Woodfin Community Center (20 Community Rd.), and Weaverville Community Center (60 Lake Shore Dr.) will also be open.
- Election Day: On Nov. 2, polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Find your precinct here.
