Last week, Jon and Amanda Hency, the owners of West Asheville’s The Mothlight (701 Haywood Rd.), announced they were closing the doors of the beloved venue after seven years. They opened in October of 2013 after renovating Mr. Fred’s Beds, part of Haywood Furniture that specialized in mattresses, futons + more.
While they noted that COVID-19 played a part, other factors – including their transition into parenthood + other career interests – also affected the decision. They also shared that they had been thinking about selling the biz, but that economic challenges caused by the pandemic made that option unrealistic.
Traveling + local musicians, storytellers, circus acts, and many others graced The Mothlight’s intimate stage during the time it was open. The venue was known for its Free Mondays, which often highlighted performers just coming onto the scene but occasionally featured much bigger names, including Moses Sumney back in January. And, it was also a community hub, hosting holiday pop-ups, local fundraisers, and even hip-hop + wrestling nights.
The Hencys encouraging their fans to continue to support their favorite musicians + venues in whatever ways they can, including potentially paying more for tickets and drinks when things do reopen.
