We can’t believe it’s almost Thanksgiving. AVLweekend is taking a break next week — look out for our next edition on Thurs., Dec. 1.

Editor Laura here. If you’re not already in the holiday spirit, then perhaps this Saturday’s Asheville Holiday Parade will do the trick. Anyone remember when Brook and I served as last year’s Grand Marshals? This year, it’ll be Asheville’s own celebrity chefs Katie Button and Meherwan Irani.

Ready for a new tradition? The inaugural Write Local, Read Local! Author Fair also takes place Saturday and will be overflowing with local literary talent, including novelists Thomas Calder and Harry Bryan.

Finally, I’m hoping to check out Little Jumbo’s new resident fiddle phenomenon Casey Driessen for his weekly “Sunday Experiment.” I’m already dreaming about my cocktail order: the Negroni Scout. Maybe I’ll see you there?

As we all know, Western NC is a favorite year-round road trip destination to beat the heat in the summer, take a scenic drive in the fall, and hit the slopes in the winter. A visit to Appalachian Ski Mountain for night skiing and snow tubing, followed by dinner + drinks in nearby Boone or Blowing Rock is practically tradition.

Why go?

  • Choo, choo — the sound of the Tweetsie Railroad echoes through the hills as it takes you around the Wild West Theme Park.
  • Get your Southern food fix at Dan’l Boone Inn, which has been serving homecooked meals for over 50 years. The Boone staple regularly makes Southern Living’s lists of “best country cooking restaurants.”
  • Bright Boone Home, stay just a short walk to downtown and the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. ($363/night)*
