Plus, challah baking and matzah ball soup class

Editor Laura here. This weekend, we celebrate the legacy of former Ashevillian Zelda Fitzgerald with a roster of events, including everything from workshops and panels to tarot card readings. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Feeling pent up from a winter of hibernation? Shake out those legs at Saturday’s Shamrock 5K + 10K or Beer City Four-Miler.

Last, but certainly not least fabulous, is the Oscars! The Grail Moviehouse is going all out this Sunday evening with a red carpet celebration and showing — there will be “paparrazzi,” popcorn, and presumably plenty of fabulous outfits.

Keep reading for even more local happenings, from seed workshops to Tina & Her Pony’s album release party.

Our guide to Albuquerque, NM

Great Escapes: Our guide to Albuquerque, NM

New Mexico is often overlooked when it comes to tourism, but we have firsthand knowledge that the great city of Albuquerque is so much more than “Breaking Bad” and “High School Musical.”

Here’s what The Duke City has in store for you.

Why go?

  • Albuquerque is flanked on the city’s east side by The Sandia Mountains, which rise to more than 10,600 feet in elevation. Albuquerque sunsets are famous for their watermelon pink color in front of the soft purple-colored mountains.

Act like a local:

  • Stop by Frontier or one of Golden Pride’s four locations for a breakfast burrito — yes, burrito — and a sweet roll, which is sorta like a gigantic buttery cinnamon roll. Just trust us.

Where to stay:

  • Vrbo: This Spanish Casita with a rooftop deck is just minutes from downtown and old town. (~$90/night)*
