The meal includes lasagna (with housemade meat-free sausage),salad, spiked blondies, and a bottle of wine. Place your order through Sat., Dec. 19 for pickup on Weds., Dec. 23 to make your holiday merry + bright.

ComingSoon ○ Former Buxton Hall sous chef Silver Cousler is opening Neng Jr.’s, a progressive Filipinx restaurant, in the former Mothlight building at 701 Haywood Rd. (which will also house Different Wrld)early in 2021. The restaurant will feature Filipinx classics in a meat-and-three format.🍴 (Asheville Citizen-Times)
Closing ○ Bodega on Broadway(28 Broadway St.) will close its doors after this weekend, citing the economic + health impact of the pandemic. It will be open through this Sun. from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. The space, formerly Asheville Beauty Academy, started offering groceries + provisions early in the pandemic. They are hoping to reopen in a different location next year.
Edu ○ A-B Tech has launched a new scholarship for students impacted by COVID-19. The A-B Tech Works Scholarship will award up to $3,000 for the spring semester to students who have experienced job or income loss due to the pandemic. Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to students already enrolled at the college. 🎓 ○ UNC Asheville student London Newton is the recipient of the Community Impact Student Award, which recognizes a student leader who has demonstrated a deep commitment to community involvement + who inspires their peers. London, who is Student Government Association president, has worked for inclusion and diversity of voices in administrative decision making on campus. North Carolina Campus Compact awards one student from each member school annually. 👏
Coronavirus ○ Check out the latest COVID-19 statsfor NC from the Department of Health and Human Services here. As of Wednesday afternoon, 7,247 cases and 136 deaths have been reported in Buncombe County. ○ The Asheville, Buncombe COVID-19 task force has been working with local businesses to become compliant with the new COVID-19 protocol. So far, no citations or fines have been issued for breaking the recent mandates. The task force consists of Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Asheville Police Department officers, and fire + health department officials. (WLOS) ○ The first doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in WNC. The distribution plan for the state works in phases. Currently, the vaccine is being administered to individuals in Phase 1a, frontline healthcare workers + residents + staff at living facilities. Phase 1b will move onto adults with high exposure risk or severe illness. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
WaterCooler ○ What’s happening with Charlotte FC, Charlotte’s MLS team? The expansion team was announced last December but their debut was put on hold by the pandemic. They’re set to play their first game in 2022. So far, the team has 10,000 season-ticket deposits for 31,000 seats. Renovations to the Bank of America Stadium, which will make it more soccer friendly, are on schedule. ⚽ (Charlotte Observer)
Civic ○ The city is looking for your feedback on the greenway plan, ADA transition plan + pedestrian plan. The feedback process and end result, also called Close the GAP, brings together all three plans to create a more integrated network that will address them simultaneously. Two surveys – on theADA Transition Plan survey + Close the GAP– are now open for public comment. 🚲
Ranked ○ Asheville just secured thetop spotfor PETA’s 2020Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Small Cities. The org cites our 110+ vegan-friendly restaurants, vegan festivals, Vegan Awareness Week + more. PETA sent a certificate to Mayor Esther Manheimer in recognition of the achievement. This is the first year PETA has recognized small cities in its awards. 🌱 (PETA)

This year, COVID-19 was an additional challenge for the group, who received many more requests for help in areas including food assistance, case management services, and harm reduction services. Folks they serve have increased by 16%, and they’ve been able to provide 51% more in emergency financial assistance this fiscal year.
