Hello Friday.

July 01 2022

How well do you know Brook + Laura?

Hey there, Asheville. Each day we get the privilege of kicking off our morning with you. We’re pen pals, friends, buddies — whatever you want to call us (consider this our formal invitation asking you to be ours), and we feel like we’ve really gotten to know one another.

So, we’re testing your knowledge. We’ve put together an AVL-specific game challenging you to get to know us a little more. Bonus points if you send us some of your favorites from the list. The answer key is in The Wrap (but no peeking).

One thing we both feel the same about? Waterfalls. | Photo via Asheville Jeep Tours

It’s a sunny and 70-degree day in the Land of Sky. You’ll find AVLtoday editor (1) on the covered patio at Mary’s Burritos with a heaping plate of pupusas + platanos, fueling up for a fun time at Carrier Park. AVLtoday editor (2) is likely on a bike adventure in the River Arts District, ideally making a pit stop for a Baby Bull burger or a brew at The Wedge Brewing Co.

Asheville artist Jane Kramer is headlining at Salvage Station. AVLtoday editor (3) has front row seats + backstage passes. Meanwhile, AVLtoday editor (4) is patiently awaiting the next time electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso visits town.

Two can keep a secret, but we’re letting you in on ours.

“Heiwa has the best veggie sushi in the state.” – AVLtoday editor (5)

“Parking is always free downtown if you walk or ride your bike.” – AVLtoday editor (6)

Talk about hair-raising thrills

The craziest thing you might catch AVLtoday editor (7) trying out is an overnight backpacking excursion somewhere in Pisgah National Forest — or attempting to attend every food-related event in town. Whereas AVLtoday editor (8) prefers to play it a little safer and gets plenty of kicks from the games at Asheville Retrocade — though buying a house here was so harrowing it likely gave her more than a few gray hairs.

The AVLToday events page has a hold on us. AVLtoday editor (9) is still hoping to attend The Odd’s Community Flea Market to score some rad taxidermy art for her BFF — anyone free for the July 2 event? AVLtoday editor (10) already has eyes for the Heritage Fire tasting event at Franny’s Farm on Sun., July 17.

If the weather plays nice, we’re taking the scenic route

AVLtoday editor (11) won’t say no to a windows down cruise along the Blue Ridge Parkway listening to Patsy Cline. AVLtoday editor (12) enjoys the views in every direction when she’s behind the wheel, but she’s especially partial to a leisurely drive out to Cherokee whilst jamming out to OutKast.

Not your grandma’s wicker 👀

We’d never guess that these chic patio chairs are made from recycled water bottles. | Photo provided by Outer

If you hear the word “wicker” and think of a frumpy, broken piece of furniture, you’re not alone — but thanks to Outer, a company that crafts stylish outdoor furniture with an eye toward sustainability, it’s time to rethink wicker.

By using recycled water bottles as source material, Outer has created eco-friendly wicker furniture that not only looks ultra-modern, but is durable enough to last a decade.

Bonus: Each cushion uses triple memory foam for max comfiness.*

POST OF THE DAY

Frocks that rock

Instagram

📸 @museumofthecherokeeindian

Cherokee Nation artist Kenny Glass has created a new collection of traditional ribbon skirts. Worn by numerous Native American tribes, including the Cherokee Nation, these pieces of clothing symbolize Native women’s power + resilience.

Kenny’s ribbon skirts, known for blending traditional Cherokee designs with modern cultural elements, feature bold colors and fresh patterns (we know we’re not the only ones getting Wu-Tang Clan vibes from the bee prints) for pieces with real panache. Find them exclusively at the Museum’s gift store.
