  • Pactiv Evergreen has announced it will cease operations at its Canton paper mill and reduce workforce at its Waynesville location. The plant has operated for 100+ years and about 1,300 positions will be eliminated through these closings. These changes will take place in June. 🏭 (WLOS)

  • The City of Asheville will install new sidewalks on West Asheville’s Vermont Avenue this summer. This fall or winter, the city also plans to install 33 new trees to make up for the eleven trees that were removed as part of the upgrades.

  • A new radio station is launching in the Swannanoa Valley. Named 96.1 The Bear, the show will broadcast out of downtown Black Mountain at Town Hardware & General Store. The station will focus on classic country music from artists like Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard. 🪕 (Asheville Citizen-Times)

  • Hickory Nut Gap Farm is hosting a bird watching event on Saturday, March 18 in honor of the spring equinox. Attendees will have a chance to explore the farm, learn from birder Noah Poulos, and indulge in a complimentary biscuit brunch. The event runs from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. 🐦
  • Speaking of birds, Pack Memorial Library is hosting a live raptor program with Carolina Naturalists’ Carlton Burk on Saturday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. The event will explore what makes predatory birds special and is a free program for all ages. 🦅

  • The Benevolent Spirits program is kicking off another round of fundraising to help feed earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.   • Asheville-based singer-songwriter Hannah Kaminer has launched a kickstarter to fund her third studio album.
