Lace up your hiking boots, because we’ve compiled a hiking guide for the Asheville area with 14 routes and trails to help you plan your next adventure and experience breathtaking views.

Note: While parks and trails may be listed as open, we recommend checking park websites before visiting for further info, current trail conditions, and safest practices for the area.

Key: Easy = 🥾| Moderate = 🥾🥾 | Hard = 🥾🥾🥾

Close to town

Bearwallow Mountain, N35.4607, W-82.3681
  • Difficulty: 🥾🥾
  • Length: 2.1 mile loop
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
This trail slopes gently uphill, eventually leading you to a gorgeous, pastoral bald with plenty of space to roam and picnic. Very often, you’ll see cows roaming the bald.

Rattlesnake Lodge, 667 State Rd. 2109, Weaverville
  • Difficulty: 🥾🥾
  • Length: 3.7 mile loop
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
What this hike lacks in sweeping summit views, it makes up for with historic artifacts. After a good number of switchbacks and a few rocky outcrops, you’ll encounter the former site of the Rattlesnake Lodge, which was built in 1904 and gets its name from the now-defunct living room that was covered in rattlesnake skins.

Craggy Gardens

Craggy Gardens is known for its twisty rhododenrons.

Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest

Craggy Gardens, Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 364
  • Difficulty: 🥾
  • Length: 1.9 mile out-and-back
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
In the summer, blueberries are ripe for the picking and rhododendrons famously decorate the landscape of this iconic Asheville trail — but the panoramic views of Pisgah are sublime all year-long.

Max Patch

Appalachian Trail

Max Patch Loop, Max Patch Rd.
  • Difficulty: 🥾
  • Length: 1.5 mile loop
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
The drive up to the Max Patch parking lot is bumpy and twisty, but if you can manage that, you’ll be rewarded with a short hike and deeply memorable views of the mountains.

  • The Asheville Bread Festival is returning for its 16th year and tickets are officially on sale. The fest takes place Saturday, April 22-Sunday, April 23 and includes workshops, demos, and other bread-centric events. Personally, we’re eyeing the Introduction to Sourdough Pastry with Betsy Gonzalez.
Number
  • $39.6 million. That’s how much lodging tax revenue the BCTDA expects to accrue in fiscal year 2024. This is a $2.3 million projected increase from 2023. The organization’s committee based this number on trends, projections, key economic indicators, and other industry research.

Ranked
  • Asheville has been ranked as the No. 4 “hottest small rental market,” according to a study from Rent Cafe. In practice, that means vacant apartments have become 5% more competitive in the last year and are filled in an average of 29 days (eight days shorter than the national average). With an occupancy rate of 96%, this makes Asheville the hottest rental market in the state.
Trending
  • Aurora borealis, also known as Northern Lights, rarely makes its way down to North Carolina — however, it is possible. Late last week, local photographer James Reynolds captured the aurora borealis on the Blue Ridge Parkway. At the time of capture, he says it “was only faintly visible to the naked eye,” but with a long exposure setting on his camera he was able to capture the effect.

Correction
  • In our guide to recent guide to Asheville City Schools, we erroneously included the Mountain City Public Montessori School. It will not be a part of Asheville City Schools when it opens later this year.
