With summer in full swing, you may have some extra time on your hands. What better way to spend it than by giving back to those in need. No mater your area of expertise, there’s a nearby volunteer opportunity for you.

If you’re a mental health advocate

  • NAMI Western Carolina | Help out the local chapter of this national organization by assisting with advocacy, support, and administrative or fundraising tasks.
  • SeekHealing | Serve in one of the many volunteer opportunities available including the listening line, connection mission, or community aftercare program.

If you’re an animal lover

  • Appalachian Wildlife Refuge | Help transport wildlife, operate the hotline, input animal care data, or get hands-on opportunities for animal care.
  • Asheville Humane Society | Wash dishes, help with community outreach, assist with adoptions, help coordinate events, or take the shelter’s most energetic dogs on hikes.

Supporters of veterans

  • ABCCM | Help serve the community through crisis services, veterans’ services, food preparation and serving, medical ministry, and administrative tasks.
  • Equinox Ranch | Help build housing for combat veterans learning coping strategies to integrate into their everyday lives at this riverfront ranch in nearby Cullowhee.

Weather
  • The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Buncombe County through Thursday, June 22. Eastern parts of the county are at the highest risk, with six to eight inches of rain expected for the area. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
Civic
  • Asheville is a recipient of the latest round of grant funding from the Mellon Foundation. Funds will be used to revamp Pack Square Park to reflect the city’s multicultural background. It includes support for Boosting the Block, an effort connecting the redesigned Pack Square with the Block, a historic district of Black businesses.
Coming Soon
  • The Comedy Zone is slated to open in Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. The venue will host comedians from Wednesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. each week. The laughs will kick off with a set from Andy Forrester and special guest Jason Allen King on Thursday, July 6.

  • Juicy Lucy’s Burger Bar and Grill nabbed the number 48 spot in Yelp’s list of 2023 Top 100 Burgers Spots in America. The casual joint takes its name from the delectable style of cheese-stuffed patties. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

  • The Story Parlor announced Shunyu Huang as its next artist-in-residence, creating a three-part “Memory Quilt” project. Shunyu will share art and stories on the last three Thursdays of July, focusing on memories rooted in the five senses.

  • Alina Celeste and Mi Amigo Hamlet will host the interactive event, Being Bilingual Rocks!, immersing kiddos in a blend of cultures, sounds, and language. See the show on Friday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m. at at the Skyland/South Buncombe Library and at 2 p.m. at the West Asheville Library.
