Are you ready for an adventure, Asheville? There are hundreds of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered right here in our city. Here’s how you can venture out and find them.
Enter Geocaching, the world’s largest scavenger hunt. Participants use GPS coordinates to locate caches — think hidden containers filled with small, tradeable knick-knacks that can be found in outdoor public spaces. Geocaches come in all sorts of shapes and sizes + vary in how difficult they are to find.
But who creates the geocaches? People like you. The hunt is created by and for the community, so anyone is able to find or hide a cache.
Pro tip: Make sure to bring a pen so you can sign the log to let other geocachers know you were there.

Located on Town Mountain, the Windy Gap Residence balances an understated, minimal design with the soul of AVL’s mountain region.
The holistic, energy-efficient design earned an energy performance of 47% better than code — an estimated $2,700 annual energy savings — and features a solar-ready roof that can take the house to Net Zero.
Three lower-level spaces, designed to evolve over time for a multi-generational family’s needs, can serve as guest bedrooms, an art studio, a future in-law’s suite, a bunk room, or a den.
Until midnight tonight, Buncombe County is under a Code Orange air quality alert. Appalachian Wildlife Refuge will be appearing on the TODAY show tomorrow Wednesday, July 19 between 8:35 and 9:00 a.m. The feature will highlight the work that the nonprofit has been doing all over WNC since its inception in October 2014.
Appalachian Wildlife Refuge provides care for wildlife in crisis, getting the animals of our ecosystem back on their feet to make their essential contributions in the wild. In addition to offering rehabilitation, the organization educates the public about its role in caring for native wildlife — what to do and where to get help when you encounter animals in need.
The TODAY show crew recently paid a visit to Appalachian Wildlife Refuge for filming and interviews, where they learned not just about the organization’s mission but the practical steps that locals can take to find care for injured and orphaned animals. To get the inside scoop, make sure you tune in on Wednesday via local NBC affiliate WYFF.
