MB HAYNES recently celebrated a significant milestone in its commitment to safety.

In less than a year, the local electrical, heating, and cooling company achieved one million hours worked without a lost time injury — which is no small feat.

The N.C. Department of Labor’s Million Hour Safety Awards Program recognizes firms that accumulate one million employee hours with no injuries or illnesses involving days away from work. Achieving this requires collective dedication to safety measures and practices, especially since The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries from the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that construction and mining occupations accounted for the second highest number of occupational deaths out of all fatal work injuries in 2021.

Throughout the past million hours, MB HAYNES consistently:
  • Emphasized safety protocols
  • Provided comprehensive safety training programs
  • Ensured the implementation of strict safety measures across all its operations

Let’s play bug bingo

What’s your favorite bug? | Graphic by 6AM City
Grown-ups, do you have a kid who loves creepy-crawlies? Give them this field guide to local bug finding.

Have you ever gone looking for bugs? To be an expert bug hunter, you need:
  • A magnifying glass
  • A phone to take pictures with
  • A notepad to write down your discoveries
Now that you have everything, you’re ready to play bug bingo. Here are a couple of our favorite local bugs:

Dragonfly

Did you know that there are over 3,000 types of dragonflies? They’re great hunters and can fly in every direction. Look in wet places like ponds, lakes, and marshes (like Willow Pond at the North Carolina Arboretum).

Leopard slug

This little guy might be a bit hard to find because they’re so good at blending in with the mud. But you’ll know it’s a leopard slug by its black spots. Search for it at night, typically somewhere damp and dark.

Tap the button below for more bugs + hints on where to find these local critters.

The only issue with writing today’s round up of August events is that I now want to go to all of them. Looks like I’ll be booked and busy this month. I’m especially excited for the Asheville FM Vinyl Record Fair.
