Arts AVL has announced the 11 recipients of its Arts for Schools Grants, which support nonprofit arts organizations and qualified teaching artists in Buncombe County that are offering arts education. Grant recipients, which included groups like the Asheville Symphony Orchestra + Journeymen, were awarded $500-$2,000.

Fairview Library will be hosting its inaugural Fairview Poetry Festival on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the wisdom and words of WNC. Six award-winning poets will read their original works + book sales, author signings, and live music will take place during the after-reading reception.

Mars Hill University’s precision dance team, the Bailey Mountain Cloggers, won first place in the Young Adult Team category at the America’s Clogging Hall of Fame National Championships in October. The team also took home two first-runner-up titles as well as numerous other awards over the course of the weekend.

From Albert’s epic tale of heroism to Anne’s pajama-clad connection with a new friend, Craig’s limitless hobbies to Beatrice’s story of a crystal-ball-juggling commune leader — it’s not possible for us to pick just one favorite moment from the AVLtoday storytelling open mic last Monday. Each teller offered their own funny, heartwarming, entertaining take on what makes them proud to live in Asheville.

November is National Novel Writing Month. Writing a novel has long been a goal of mine. I have many a notebook stashed away with incomprehensible plot and character notes. This might just be my year, because libraries throughout Buncombe County are hosting NaNoWriMo events all month long to help get creative juices flowing.
