With the year coming to an end, we’re taking a moment to celebrate some of Asheville’s accomplishments. Throughout 2023, our beloved city has landed on multiple top lists and gotten notable mentions from major media outlets — so we’re sharing a few of our favorites features from the past 365 days.

Joining the ranks

The South’s Best Cities 2023 | No. 3
The Land of the Sky ranked quite high in Southern Living’s roundup of the greatest places our region has to offer — we got a nod for our numerous breweries and artist studio spaces.

Top 20 Music Cities in America | No. 13
We may have tied with Seattle for this spot (we’ll get you next time, SEAtoday), but Asheville’s music scene is number one in our eyes.

15 Favorite Cities in the United States of 2023 | No. 15
Travel + Leisure readers praised Asheville for its vibrant arts, delectable food scene, and plethora of outdoor adventures.

Other notable features

In February of this year, Citizen Vinyl got a spotlight from CNN. The local record factory was highlighted for its unique blend of music, food, and art — including its vinyl record production, public listening room, and craft cocktails.

In May, the New York Times shared an itinerary detailing 36 hours in Asheville, with must-do activities like taking a tour with Hood Huggers International and dancing the night away at Asheville Beauty Academy.

This year Neng Jr.'s was on a roll, earning an acclaimed place on both the New York Times Restaurant List and Bon Appetit’s roundup of the 24 best new restaurants of 2023.

We bet there will be even more to applaud in 2024.

News Notes
Today Is
  • The sun may set at 5:20 p.m. today, but good news is on the horizon... literally. Today is the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs when the North Pole is tilted the furthest from the sun, resulting in the shortest day of the year — which means the days will start getting longer.
Sports
  • Former UNC Asheville women’s basketball player Sheila Ford Duncan will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame this spring. During her career, Duncan was named the 1984 NAIA National Player of the Year and became the first player in women’s collegiate history to score more than 2,000 points and snag more than 2,000 rebounds.
Environment
  • The US Department of Agriculture has released a proposal to alter forest management plans to conserve 128 old-growth forests — including the Nantahala and Pisgah national forests. The proposal’s review process is ongoing, but you can submit comments on the plan through Friday, Feb. 2. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
Cause
  • Bounty of Bethlehem is gearing up to serve its 40th Annual Community Christmas Dinner in Hendersonville, offering a hot meal and a sense of belonging to anyone who needs it. The group is accepting donations of turkey, ham, and dessert through Monday, Dec. 25 and still has volunteer spots available to help out on the big day. (WLOS)
Outdoors
  • See what’s in the stars for 2024. Join the Astronomy Club of Asheville on Friday, Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. for its first public star gaze of the year at Grassland Mountain Observatory. A temporary gate code will be posted on the club’s website on the day of the event.
Plan Ahead
  • Beginning Friday, Jan. 26, the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will debut the “Vera B. Williams / STORIES” exhibit. Williams is widely known for writing and illustrating children’s books, but the exhibit will showcase the artist’s wider range of work, as well as her time at Black Mountain College and her activism.
Pro Tip
  • Do you have a real Christmas tree? Or maybe a wreath or two? Residents within City of Asheville limits can place these items at the curb for your regular brush pickup — but don’t forget to remove everything. See details + other disposal options.*
Number
  • Three. That’s the number of architecture awards Spruce Ridge Cabin, designed by Altura Architects, earned this year alone. Take a virtual tour of the nearly 6,000 ft elevation minimal modern cabin + learn how the team minimized its impact on the fragile ecosystem while shaping the inviting, harmonious space.*
Shop
  • ICYMI, Ambiente Modern Furniture is offering couch-sized discounts on a huge selection of high-quality modern furniture pieces. This treasure trove for the design-savvy shopper includes luxe sofas, sleek dining sets, recliners, dressers, and more. See what you can upgrade.*

Eda Rhyne Distilling Co. has opened a second location “only a country mile” away from Asheville, located at 1098 New Stock Rd. in Weaverville. Eda’s Hide-a-Way offers cocktails with the same aromatic and herbaceous craft spirits you’ll find in its tasting room, along with a selection of local brews.

The laid-back joint also gives you a chance to let your competitive spirit flow with ping pong, pool, and an outdoor shuffleboard court. But if relaxing is more your speed, you can grab a seat to sip by the outdoor fire pit.

Stop by Wednesdays through Sundays from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. to check it out for yourself (and admire all the flashy neon signs on display).
