New year, same you, better habits. Looking to incorporate more movement into your routine this year? There are many benefits of regular exercise, from increased energy levels to a better mood and more.

The best way to stay consistent: finding something you enjoy doing. Identifying an activity that’s genuinely fun for you can shift your mindset from it being something you “have to do” to being something you are excited to do.

Pro tip: The overall goal is movement. It’s not about having a rigorous workout routine — it’s about moving mindfully, being kind to yourself + your body, and having fun.

Here are a few ways to get started:

Get outdoors

There’s a host of benefits to spending time outside, getting more grounded, and reigniting our connection with nature. Grab your walking (or running — if you’re feeling up to it) shoes, your bike, maybe even your roller blades, and head to Black Balsam Knob, Mount Mitchell, or one of these hiking spots or local parks to get moving. Temps too low to get outside? Keep reading.

Find your zen

Explore the mind-body connection by taking a yoga class. Yoga is a great way to work on strength and balance, and it’s not a stretch to say it’s a proven way to relieve stress and stay mentally healthy.

Bring the gym to you

Chilly temperatures keeping you indoors for the next couple months? Enter: An online at-home workout platform like Pvolve. At-home workouts are a great way to stay consistent, and Pvolve has a variety of low-impact workouts to help tone, strengthen, and sculpt.

Here’s to finding ways to move that feel good in 2024, Asheville. Just remember, we think you’re doing great.

Did healthier living make the resolutions list? (We know it made ours.)

As you grab hold of that fresh-start energy and look anew at your health goals, check out these three ways Mission Health’s Mission Weight Management program can help make this the year you achieve success:

A multidisciplinary team of experts

Since whole-body health is the goal, Mission Weight Management’s team consists of weight loss doctors, psychology specialists, and registered dietitians.

Support, education, and individualized plans

The team customizes a weight loss plan to your specific needs and goals. That means nutrition therapy, medical monitoring, behavioral health support, physical activity guidance, and educational classes are all important parts of the program.

Long-term results

Whether joining the Medical Weight Loss program or considering weight loss surgery, plans focus on life-changing, long-term results. Helping to make that possible is counseling, support groups, and lifestyle modification coaching.

News Notes
Drink
  • Sip on this, Asheville. Whether you’re cutting back on alcohol or cutting it out completely for Dry January, Ritual offers zero-proof alternatives (think: tequila, rum, and more) with tasty recipes so you can BYOB (be your own bartender). Check out some of our favorites.*
Active
Try This
  • Make a run for it. If you’re the type who wakes up at 5 a.m. and immediately laces up your running shoes, save the date for the Asheville Marathon and Half, coming up on Saturday, March 16. If the mileage sounds like a bit too much, you can always train for next year — we’ll be cheering you on.
Health
  • Put your breast health on the resolution list. The reason: Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Mission Breast Center recently expanded into a comforting, state-of-the-art suite at 534 Biltmore Ave. with six 3D mammography units, plus additional ultrasound and ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound System). Schedule your appointment.*
Wellness
  • After working up a sweat, it’s important to stretch it out. Take a look at these six post-workout stretches to make time for after your next movement session, whatever that may look like.
