Last year, you helped us name the best pizza: 828 Family Pizzeria. This year, we asked you to share your favorite barbecue in Asheville. Now — thanks to you and the help of a random generator — we have the official lineupfor our bracket.
Who’s in the running
Going head-to-head in the first round are:
Luella’s Bar-B-Que and Big J’s Bubba-Q | Luella’s, famous for its smoked meats and tasty sides, will go against Big J’s Bubba-Q, which may have a small storefront but packs a huge flavor punch.
How it works
Beginning today, we will host several voting rounds within our newsletters and social channels to determine Asheville’s best barbecue. Who moves on is up to you. Vote for your favorites, and the spot with more votes moves on. Simple as that. We’ll go until we have a champion, which will be announced in our Tuesday, March 26 newsletter. You will be able to voteonce per round.
How to participate
Vote for the barbecue joint you’d like to see advance to round two using the poll below. You can vote for all four spots or as little as one. Once we count all the votes, we’ll share an updated bracket and new poll in an upcoming newsletter.

A growers collective takes root
Appalachian Seed Growers Collective starts to take root

Like many nonprofit initiatives, the Appalachian Seed Growers Collective grew out of a need — a need for local, regionally adapted seeds, a need for a committed growers community, a need for a network of support.
The Utopian Seed Project, the organization behind the collective, trials crops and varieties in the Southeast to promote resiliency and biodiversity in the local food + farming system, but founder Chris Smith says they needed to bring others together.
“There’s very, very little seed grown in the South,” says Smith. “And Utopian Seed Project is doing the work to adapt varieties to our humidity, diseases, all that sort of stuff — but we realized we weren’t able to grow it all out. Nor did we want to be at the center of the universe. It was important for us to have a network of seed growers, so we decided to launch this collective.”
Prepared Hero’s Emergency Fire Blanket, a highly-rated staple to have on hand in your kitchen or yard. It’s easier to use than common fire extinguishers + leaves no mess behind, too.
I am unashamedly a nerd, and growing up, I loved school. Even now, I’d take notes and join discussions and write essays any day of the week. What I didn’t much care for were the tests and quizzes — but I might just overcome my testing anxiety for Punch Bucket Lit’s Literary Pop Quiz. Get your team together for genre-focused categories, plus a bonus round on strange author facts, at DSSOLVR on Thursday, March 28.
