Asheville Symphony and Brevard Music Center (BMC) have teamed up to bring Olga Kern, one of the greatest pianists of her generation, to WNC.
On Tuesday, May 14, BMC presents Olga Kern in recital, and on Saturday, May 18, the world-renowned pianist will join the Asheville Symphony for this year’s Masterworks finale, “Masterworks 7: Titan.”
Discover Asheville Symphony’s “Titan”
In the Asheville Symphony’s finale, Kern will take on Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
Once deemed “unplayable,” the piece requires mastery of just about every artistic and technical resource. It’s no wonder it quickly grew to fame + secured its place as one of the most popular — and bombastic — piano concertos ever composed.
Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan” is a fitting companion on the program. “Titan” evokes a journey through nature’s beauty and fury. Its grandeur and intensity make for a powerful and emotional Masterworks Series finale.
A new Chick-fil-A will open at 970 Brevard Rd. this Thursday, May 9. About 85 full- and part-time jobs were created from the location’s opening. The fast food restaurant will begin service at 6:30 a.m. on its opening day — regular hours will be Monday-Saturday, 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

French Broad Ave. Made possible by a partnership with Green Built Alliance and Appalachian Offsets donations, the $20,000 in annual energy cost savings will be reinvested by UWABC to benefit county families.

If you’re a Spotify user, you might have noticed the feature that generates playlists based on moods throughout your day — better known as your “daylist.” We’re curious, readers, what moods would be on Asheville’s daylist?
It’s time to play a little game of Mad Libs. Take, for example, one of City Editor Grace’s daylists, “cold slowcore Monday afternoon,” or City Editor Molly’s “nature campfire Monday afternoon.” Now, we need you to think of the Land of the Sky and fill in the blanks for us to try and find the best mood board for our playlist. To start, give us:
An adjective
A genre
An activity
Pro tip: If you need inspo, check your own daylist (for free or premium users) by searching “daylist” on Spotify.
Submit your playlist ideas to us by Friday, May 10 at 12 p.m. — we’ll pick the top ones to be voted on by you, our dear readers, in a future newsletter.
A gift for your favorite teacher. We promise this is better than a shiny apple on their desk. Check out our teacher appreciation giveaway on Six and Main’s Instagram.
I’m very eagerly awaiting your Asheville daylist recommendations. It’s one of my favorite features Spotify has released in a while, purely because of the absurdity of the playlist titles. I’m currently writing this while listening to my “yearning situationship Monday afternoon” daylist. But don’t worry, I’m okay, I promise.
