Salvage Station’s property acquired by NCDOT for I-26 expansion

Yesterday saw some sad news from one of Asheville’s favorite music venues. Salvage Station shared in an Instagram post that the NCDOT is acquiring the property through eminent domain to build out the I-26 Connector project, and the venue must vacate its property at 466 Riverside Dr. at the end of 2024.
Despite losing its current property, it’s not the end for the live music locale. Salvage Station shared in the same post that it plans to relocate and rebuild, saying, “Where we go is unknown, but for sure, if a salvage yard can become a nationally recognized music venue, we will certainly figure out this next chapter.”
You can support the space by buying tickets for its lineup of shows through the end of the year. There’s something for everyone, from bluegrass to hip-hop to jam bands, so go snag those spots. And follow along for updates on the next chapter.

Local frontline workers (31 in total) were nominated for Explore Asheville’s first annual Heroes of Hospitality Awards, honoring those who provide exceptional service and represent Asheville and Buncombe County with pride.

It’s getting hot out here, y’all, and we know we’re not alone in our search for relief from the heat. Luckily, starting tomorrow, May 25, county + city public pools will be open on weekends (plus Memorial Day).
Then, beginning Monday, June 10 for city pools and Tuesday, June 11 for county pools, facilities will be open seven days a week.
Erwin Pool | Seasonal, daily | 58 Lees Creek Rd., Asheville | $3 | The spacious outdoor pool has a reputation of being well-maintained and offers plenty of space for sun + fun.
Hominy Valley Pool | Seasonal, daily | 25 Twin Lakes Rd., Candler | $3 | If you’re headed to this outdoor spot (which also has baseball fields + a basketball court nearby), we recommend stopping by Sand Hill Kitchen for an award-winning fried chicken sandwich.
Pro tip: Anyone with a Buncombe County Public Library card can get a ZOOM pass for free pool admission.
The ultimate kitchen appliance for summer: the Cuisinart 2-Quart Ice Cream Maker. No ice, salt, or hand-churning required — simply freeze the bowl and pour in your custom creation. We’re thinking black raspberry or chocolate chip…
It seems we’ve officially reached the point in the year that being outside from the late morning to the late afternoon is unappealing — or maybe I’m just sensitive to the heat. Either way, this weather has me seeking out activities after the sun goes down. And that’s where the Astronomy Club of Asheville comes in. The group will host a public star gazes on Friday, May 31 at Grassland Mountain Observatory and on Friday, June 7 at UNC Asheville’s Lookout Observatory.
