The town of Spruce Pine is in for a close encounter of the third kind this weekend. On Saturday, June 8, extraterrestrial enthusiasts and UFO hunters will invade the streets of downtown for the free Spruce Pine Alien Festival.
On the Milky Way Main Stage, you’ll find a musical lineup as well as presentations from expert speakers talking asteroid mining, Mars missions, and secret space programs. If you want to don your best cosmic costume or “Men in Black” getup, you can compete for cash prizes in the Area 51 Costume Contest.
The festival will also have more than 175 vendors selling galactic goods + outer space eats, and the kids can visit the Close Encounter Zone for games, bounce houses, and slides.
Nearby, the AlienXPO will host the serious out-of-this-world investigators. The ticketed event will feature “Ancient Aliens” star Mike Bara as well as other extraterrestrial experts discussing abductions, phenomena, and sightings.

I fully admit that in my younger years, my choice of cocktails could be summed up as “the sweeter the better” — but nowadays, my tastes have traveled to the opposite end of the flavor spectrum. So you’d better believe I’ll be adding Bitter Tooth to my at-home bar. The new release from Eda Rhyne Distiling Co. is an Appalachian take on classic red bitter (think Campari), mingling the beloved citrus + spice with local flavor. Test it out at the launch party this Saturday, June 8, 3-10 p.m.
