Tourists games have special offerings throughout the week, like fireworks on Fridays.
The Tourists have gone by several different monikers since their inception — including the Moonshiners and Mountaineers. The team officially became the Tourists in 1976 due to Asheville’s status as a popular destination for travelers. The team incorporated the moon into its logo in 2010, paying homage to its original team name of the Moonshiners. Currently, the Tourists compete in the South Atlantic League and they’re the High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Take a seat for Park Bench Chats
If you can’t make it in July, mark your calendar for October, January, or April. | Photo by AVLtoday
In late June, Asheville Parks and Recreation (APR) released the Recreate Asheville draft plan with a last request for feedback before a final presentation to the Asheville City Council in August. And although this 10-year parks plan is nearing the finish line, we’re not out of the woods yet. And APR Director D. Tyrell McGirt is keeping the conversation going with Park Bench Chats.
Park Bench Chats are a chance for residents to share their ideas and opinions with McGirt during one-on-one or small group conversations. You can sign up for a 20-minute time slot (or just drop in, if the schedule allows) to let the director know what you want to see on the local parks landscape.
The first event will take place on Tuesday, July 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Recreation Park offices.
My best friend is coming to visit me this weekend, and she’s put a whole lot of activities on our agenda. But those plans are going to have to change — because I just learned that Beth Kellerhals, culinary savant and baker behind the forthcoming ButterPunk, is hosting a biscuit pop-up (meaning a mini sale and not those exploding biscuit tubes that terrify unsuspecting epicureans) at Bad Manners Coffee this Sunday, July 21. Grab a biscuit sammie from 9 a.m. to whenever they sell out.
