Artists will step into the spotlight at venues around the city, from intimate interiors to expansive outdoor spaces. | Photo by Fiasco Media
AVLFest did not come quietly. When the highly anticipated inaugural festival launched in 2023, its lineup included 100+ artists performing at 20+ Asheville venues. Local bands took stages alongside established acts and nationally recognized artists. Now on the cusp of its second year, the festival has a high bar to reach.
And it’s poised to hit just the right note. AVLFest returns from Thursday, Aug. 1 to Sunday, Aug. 4, with a promise to be even bigger than before.
By the numbers
But let’s break down just what we mean by “bigger than before.”
This year, the festival expects to host nearly 10,000 people (which includes attendees, artists, staff, and volunteers).
More than 200 artists performed last year, but this year’s lineup includes 350+ artists.
Those artists will perform on 22 stages across the city, with venues like Eulogy, Citizen Vinyl, and Jack of the Wood joining the festival calendar.
Gather friends, family, and everyone in between for four days of music.

Take note for this year
AVLFest’s second verse includes a variety of bonus programs. Passholders will get a chance to hear from performing artists during the Liner Notes series and see a photo exhibit of Asheville stages called “3 Songs. No Flash.” The schedule will also include comedy, family-friendly activities, and a variety of pop-up events.
The music, though, will still take center stage. Any music lover will find an artist who speaks to them — from the prog rock of Papadosio and the indie soul of Langhorne Slim to the chillwave of Washed Out and the alt-rock of The New Pornographers. A full, printable schedule will be shared soon.
Now, to practicalities. Weekend passes, which get you entry to all the venues, are available online. Dates and locations of wristband kiosks will be released the week before the festival. Pro tip: Keep an eye on social media for a heads up.

Drink
🍹 Sip on these superlatives
We’re handing out yearbook superlatives for drinks in Asheville
Yearbook superlatives are the only way we’ll be describing drinks from now on. | @thetikieasybar
There are any number of ways to describe a drink. Coffee can be robust, a cocktail can be aromatic, wine can be oaky — all of which have varying degrees of subjectivity.
So in an effort to be unhelpful and make drink descriptions even more subjective — but, perhaps, freshly appealing — we’re hearkening back to the days of Yearbook Club. The whole class (by which we mean the AVLtoday City Editors) voted, and here are a few local beverage superlatives.
Most Likely to Succeed: Cold Brew Growler
Caffeine is the not-so-secret weapon of overachievers everywhere, and while there’s a lot of delicious cold brew in this town, Kota Kai’s growler full of coffee is serious fuel for success.
Class Clown: You Boys Like Mexico!?!?!?
Many a class clown based their personality on quotes from cult classic comedies (in this case, “Super Troopers”), but this Tiki Easy Bar drink has the added bonus of a high-proof tequila base that will turn anyone into a comedian.
Which local drink would get your yearbook superlative for Biggest Flirt?
As far as classic superlatives go, this one always seemed to make the list (at least when we were in high school). So we want to know which Asheville bevs you’d describe as “flirty.”
Just when you thought you had escaped my shameless Shakespeare self-promotion — another Montford Park Players show begins. This Friday, July 26 is the opening night of “Henry V,” and it feels like being in this play is part of my theatrical destiny. My first ever tattoo was the opening two lines of this play (unfortunately, I don’t get to say those two lines, but I do have lines three and four). Between thrilling battles, international political struggle, exploration of the responsibilities of leaders, a top-of-show dance number, and a 90s-movie-trope record scratch moment, this is a free show you don’t want to miss. Get all the details.
