We’ve seen a few flurries already, but we know the question on your mind, Ashevillians — will we get more snow this year? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February.

While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring. Reminder: The first day of winter is Saturday, Dec. 21.

Temperature

We could go either way. This winter, Asheville shows moderate chances of having a slightly mild winter. The map indicates there’s a 40-50% chance temperatures that are above normal.

Precipitation

Expect slightly less precipitation. Asheville has a 33-40% chance of seeing less-than-average snow and rainfall amounts this winter.

Drought

Drought conditions are expected to improve this season.

Asheville-born musician MJ Lenderman’s album “Manning Fireworks” was ranked the No. 3 best album of 2024 by Rolling Stone. Lenderman’s album outranked popular artists like Sabrina Carpenter and trailed Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” (No. 2) and Charli xcx’s “Brat” (No. 1). (Asheville Citizen-Times)

The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s 2025 Winter Hiking Challenge is back, tasking the community to log 60 miles in 60 days, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 1. All types of movement count, including hiking trails, bike rides, and neighborhood walks. Registration is $25 per person.
