Pack your bags for a road trip to Columbia, SC this summer, when the city’s natural playground invites explorers of all ages to celebrate Great Outdoors Month in June.

From lush forests to sparkling lake shores, here are four can’t-miss ways to make the most of your outdoor adventure in this capital city:

Explore the old‑growth forest

Walk along elevated boardwalks situated beneath towering loblolly pines and bald cypresses in Congaree National Park. Keep an eye out for playful squirrels, migrating warblers, and the park’s famous swamp lilies in bloom.

Bask in sparkling waters

Whether you’re casting a line from a shaded pier, renting a boat for a day on the water, or simply soaking up the sun on the shore, Lake Murray encompasses spring serenity.

Float down the river

For a splashy afternoon, grab an inner tube and drift beneath leafy canopies on the Saluda River. Gentle currents and scenic vistas make for the perfect adventure. Pro tip: Check out this guide for more river fun.

Camp under the stars

Pitch your tent on one of three serene islands in Lake Murray. Then, enjoy evening campfires, wildlife sightings, and epic sunrises over the water.

No matter which option you choose, Columbia’s great outdoors awaits — ready to inspire, refresh, and connect you with nature all month long.

News Notes

Coming Soon

Southern Highland Craft Guild will open a new shop in downtown Asheville’s Grove Arcade. The shop will replace the former Mountain Made craft shop and allow regional artists to once again showcase their work after the Guild’s Biltmore Village shop was destroyed by Helene. A grand opening is scheduled for June.

Family

Grab your sunscreen and sunnies — the outdoor pool at Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Center will open for the season on Memorial Day weekend. Asheville Parks and Recreation also announced several ways to stay cool this summer, including foam parties, water games, and river snorkeling. See the full schedule.

Environment

Free trees are still available through Asheville GreenWorks’ online shop, and it’s the last opportunity to snag a sapling through the organization’s Reforest Asheville Program until fall. Reserve a tree (or five) and see pick-up locations.

Plan Ahead

Asheville Poverty Initiative and UnLabelMe will host “UnLabel Poverty,” a free three-day event to educate the community on the realities of poverty through photography, poetry, panel discussions, and interactive storytelling. The event will take place from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15, at 81 Broadway St., an event space downtown.
