💰 $20,000 for hurricane recovery

AVL’s own Altura Architects recently celebrated 40 years in business, marking four decades of design + community.

That’s an impressive feat for any small biz. But even more impressive is how they celebrated: Altura’s 40th Anniversary Donation Match Challenge aimed to raise $10,000 for Mountain True’s post-hurricane recovery efforts in WNC.

The community rallied to exceed that goal, and a matching donation from Altura brought the grand total to $20,000+ raised for the Asheville community.

News Notes

Development

UNC Asheville announced plans to develop the 45-acre urban forest bordered by Broadway Street and W.T. Weaver Boulevard for its Millennial Campus. Plans for phase one include a multi-purpose stadium in collaboration with Asheville City Soccer Club and mixed-use housing for students, staff, and the community. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Cause

Mountain Housing Opportunities received a $1 million grant from the Truist Foundation WNC Recovery and Resiliency Fund to support long-term disaster recovery. The money will be used to construct new homes in Black Mountain, complete storm-related repairs, and rehabilitate the nonprofit’s affordable mixed-use properties in the RAD.

Seasonal

Summer is coming. The summer solstice is this Friday, June 20, which marks the astronomical start of the season. It’s also the longest day of the year — measured by the amount of daylight — and the sun will set in Asheville at 8:48 p.m.

Arts

Nonprofit Echoes of the Forest unveiled its first piece created using fallen trees from Helene’s wreckage. Chester Shuey of Appalachian Joinery crafted a bench from an 800-pound white oak — see it sitting in front of Foundation Woodworks in the RAD and learn more about the future “echoes.”

Real Estate

Asheville City Council approved a conditional zoning request to build a 19-unit complex of low-cost studio apartments in Arden. Developer, Clifton Trust, intends for the complex to house service industry and blue-collar workers. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Biz

Tomorrow, June 17 at 5:30 p.m., Go Local Asheville and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce are hosting “The Asheville Small Business Owner’s Guide to Tariffs: From Impact to Action.” Business owners impacted by tariffs or just curious to know more can register for the free info session.

Eat

Odds are, you’ve seen miso starring on a local menu or at the grocery store. A WNC company has been making the fermented soy paste, which has roots in Chinese and Japanese cuisine, for 45+ years. Learn about American Miso Co. and find a delicious recipe to try.

Concert

July is packed with jammin’ concerts at Asheville Yards, including Gary Clark Jr., The Head and The Heart, and four more notable names. Peek at the full summer lineup.*

Edu

STEM programs at UNC Asheville are growing: the university just received a $1 million gift to establish the Woodward Scholars Program, which will provide scholarships, undergraduate research grants, and internship + study abroad opportunities for STEM students. See the full impact.*
This 3-bed, 3-bath Hendersonville home sits on nearly 20 acres of panoramic mountain views, including a pond and a 6-stall barn for you to build your dream homestead. Take a look around.*

Stat

27%. That’s how much home insurance rates have risen in the last four years, widely due to the increased frequency and scope of natural disasters like hurricanes, fires, and floods. Take this two-minute questionnaire to see if you’re wasting money on overpaying for insurance (and how you could save).*
