Helene left the front nine holes of the Asheville Municipal Golf Course in dire straits, needing months of debris and silt removal. The golf course will eventually be restored to its original Donald Ross design, but in the meantime, you can play on a new 18-hole championship-length disc golf course.

Designed with the help of US Disc Golf Champion Chris Dickerson, the par 61 course will open to the public on Friday, Aug. 1 at 9 a.m., with two tee pad placements per hole. The blue layout measures 7,900+ feet, and the red layout extends more than 6,600 feet.

You can go ahead and book a tee time, but walk-ins are welcome. Here’s what it’ll cost you to play:
  • Single round: $10, $7 for locals
  • All-day: $18, $13 for locals
According to the city’s project page for the golf course restoration and Muni’s website, the front nine are expected to reopen in mid-2027. The back nine are open for play.

News Notes

Biz

The Patton Avenue Goodwill reopened yesterday, July 8, after part of the warehouse caught fire on Monday, closing the store and a portion of the street. Nobody was hurt, and store hours are back to normal as the company investigates the cause of the fire. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Sports

Time to ruck and roll. The 10th annual Beer City 7’s rugby tournament is back at Buncombe County Sports Complex this weekend, Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Our local teams are fundraising after losing most of their equipment to the storm. Spectating is free, and food trucks will be on-site.

Cause

Even from afar, you can extend a helping hand to our neighbors in the Piedmont in the aftermath of Tropical Depression Chantal’s flooding by supporting nonprofits and offering donations to folks in need. (WRAL)

Community

Madison County hosted its first-ever Pride celebration last week on Tuesday, July 1, organized by Laurel Country Pride. Drawing more than 400 attendees, the event took place at businesses in Marshall and Hot Springs to bring support to the local LGBTQ+ community. Follow the collective on Instagram for more info on upcoming events. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Try This

The opening ceremonies are through, and the Asheville Open is underway. Bring a chair to the Aston Park Tennis Center to watch matches for free. On Friday evening, July 11, from 5 to 8 p.m., the Friday Night Lights viewing party will bring free food, a DJ, and drinks available for purchase.

Eat

Do yourself a delicious favor and pick up a Mean Pies pizza from OWL’s North Asheville location this week. And lucky you, the pizza purveyors extended their hours, now slinging perfectly crisply, cheesy pies Wednesday-Friday, 5-7:30 p.m.

State

Can’t get in at the NCDMV? You’re not alone. The appointment backlog is partly the reason why a new bill extends the driver’s license renewal period by two years. The change is valid through 2027. (WLOS)

Closed

The Cracker Barrel on Tunnel Road has permanently closed after nearly 20 years. The West Asheville location on Crowell Road, which was recently renovated, will remain open. (WLOS)
This tidy brick home in Bent Creek sits on a level corner lot with garden beds and a tool shed in the backyard, plus a raised patio overlooking it all. Our favorite part? Minutes from Blue Ridge Parkway and Biltmore Park. Take a look.*
