News Notes

Pets

Last week, the Asheville Humane Society experienced double its average intake. With the shelter at capacity, adoption fees for adult animals will be waived through the end of the month. Fall in love with a new furry friend.

History

Nearly 100 years ago, John D. Rockefeller Jr. signed a $5 million check to essentially establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park — all without setting foot onto the land. Author Steve Kemp explores why in his latest book, “An Exaltation of Parks: John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s Crusade to Save America’s Wonderlands.” (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Active

Jus’ Running is turning 27, and it’s celebrating its birthday at the Asheville Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K this weekend. Register to run or volunteer as a pacer. After the race, you can stop by to shop and get gait and injury assessments.

Eat

If you’re looking for an out-of-the-box breakfast, Vortex Doughnuts is straying ever so slightly from sweets with a donut breakfast sandwich. The yeast donut “bun” gets topped with scrambled eggs, American cheese, and your choice of bacon or sausage. Bonus: It can also be made vegan.

Cause

RiverLink is looking for volunteers to help with a wetland project at A-B Tech, creating habitats for native plants + animals, filtering rainwater, and reducing flash flooding risk. Help remove invasive Japanese Stiltgrass on Monday mornings in September.

Try This

Talk about a golden opportunity — auditions are now open for “Air Bud Returns,” the latest installment in the beloved movie series. If you want to sign up your golden retriever, you’ll need to submit a video of their best skills. For the camera-shy dogs, 30+ pet-friendly ideas await in Asheville.

Number

50 minutes. That’s how much daylight will be lost in Asheville during the month of August as the sun progressively rises later and sets earlier. We recommend taking advantage of the daylight while you have it by hitting a local trail. (AccuWeather)
Apartment hunting? Hominy at RiverBlue offers modern studio to three-bedroom apartments featuring upscale finishes, spacious layouts, and perks like a pool, outdoor kitchen, and coworking lounge. Bonus: it’s surrounded by 24 acres of preserved green space along the Hominy Creek Greenway. Take a peek inside.*

What do you look for in a coffee shop?

By a pretty considerable margin, “expertly crafted espresso” is y’all’s top priority when picking a local coffee spot. I can certainly respect that, but I’m almost always there for the cold brew.

Luckily, Dynamite Roasting just released canned nitro cold brew for the perfect cup of on-the-go joe. Right now, you can pick it up at Dynamite Coffee Bar in Black Mountain, but it’s soon headed to retailers selling Dynamite bags.

The Wrap

If you book it through the Asheville Half Marathon this weekend, it might be time to start training for the Asheville Marathon in March. With “runcations” on the rise, RUN just named the race one of 12 worth traveling for. Although I must admit, I’m more of a 5K girl myself.
