The Burton Street Community Association and Asheville Parks and Rec are teaming up to host the Burton Street Ag Fair this Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 6 p.m.
The annual gathering began 12 years ago, honoring the neighborhood’s founder, Edward W. Pearson, who held the first Buncombe County District Agricultural Fair in 1913. Historically, Black residents from across WNC traveled to the fair, which later blossomed into a celebration with parades, rides, and games.
This year, in addition to performances from John R. Hayes High Steppin’ Majorettes & Drum Corps, games, crafts, inflatables, and food vendors, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicating the Burton Street Community Center’s new playground and basketball court. To christen the new court, there will be a 3v3 basketball tournament with cash prizes on the line.
