News Notes

Closing

Taco Boy’s West Asheville location will have its final day of service this Sunday, Oct. 12. The restaurant cited ongoing impacts of Helene and broader market challenges as reasons for the closure — the Biltmore Park location will remain open. The restaurant invites the community to share their vision for the space’s next chapter.

Traffic

Brake check. Last month, Asheville City Council approved several speed limit changes, reducing speed limits to 25 miles per hour on several roads to improve safety. The new speeds are going into effect as new signs are placed — one’s already up on Craven Street.

Announced

Resurfacing of Hazel Mill Road begins today, Oct. 7. For about two weeks, crews will be repaving the road from Clayton Avenue to just north of Oak Hill Drive. Hazel Mill Road will remain open, but drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

Regional

Three Blue Ridge Parkway facilities — the Asheville Visitor Center, Minerals Museum, and Music Center — are reopened amid the ongoing federal government shutdown thanks to funding from the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Similarly, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be open through Friday, Oct. 10, due to support from Friends of the Smokies.

Pets

The pups of Asheville have packed calendars this month. This Friday, Oct. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m., Tanger Outlets Asheville is hosting a Barktober event at its new dog park. Festivities include a costume contest and plenty of photo ops with your furry friend. Keep scrolling for another pooch party.

Health

This Saturday, Oct. 11, Dementia Partners AVL is hosting a symposium at the AC Hotel in Biltmore Village to educate people living with dementia and those caring for them. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., attendees will listen to speakers and learn about local resources. A suggested donation of $35 is requested with registration.

Plan Ahead

Tickets are on sale now for Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum. Audiences can expect traditional favorites like the 50-foot lighted tree and the Quilt Garden, along with a few new surprises. Buy tickets and see what’s in store.*

Biz

You did your part — now we’re doing ours. After receiving your nominations for the best local businesses in Asheville, we’re hard at work finalizing the details and preparing for the next big step: voting. Be sure to visit the AVLtoday’s Best page when voting opens on Oct. 20. Stay tuned.

Community

AdventHealth is planning a new hospital in Weaverville and has applied for a Certificate of Need to add 129 more beds to the 92 already approved. Community support is vital to expand care and ensure local families have access to the services they need. Learn more + support.*

If you’ve ever wished for a map that highlighted all the hiking trails within city limits or longed to see where all the libraries + voting polls are located — it’s high time you met GIS mapping. GIS mapping is a go-to, visual resource used by the City + County, local organizations, and passionate locals to explore data about places in our community.

So what exactly is GIS?

GIS (geographic information system) is a tool for gathering, analyzing, and visualizing data on maps and 3D scenes to spot trends. It’s used by thousands of organizations, companies, and governments — think National Parks guiding visitors or environmental organizations sharing climate data.

How is it used locally?

The City of Asheville has its own GIS collection. Map Asheville is a comprehensive map viewer that lets you toggle layers on and off to see street maintenance responsibility, bus routes, pipes, law districts, neighborhoods + more. The map just got some upgrades to make it even more user-friendly — check out the Map Asheville Guide to make the most of the tool.

Post of the Day

Time to start planning those canine costumes because the NC Arboretum is hosting its third annual Halloween dog parade on Sunday, Oct. 26. This year’s theme is “The Wizard of Paws,” following some adorable themes of years past, like “A Space Pawdyssey” and “Pawllinators.”

From 1 to 4 p.m., enjoy the procession of pups, live music, dog-themed vendors, and prizes for best costumes.
