Development
The Lady Gloria Ridge Community, a 41-unit affordable apartment complex by Haywood Street Congregation, is expected to welcome tenants by the end of the year. The West Haywood Street project is the first from the congregation’s housing nonprofit and is named for Gloria Howard Free, the local activist who created Asheville’s Goombay Festival. Yesterday, we told you all about the newly established Helene Recovery Office, created to help carry out long-term projects in the county’s Helene Recovery Plan. Now, Buncombe County has named Kevin Madsen, an experienced emergency services and disaster recovery professional, the first Helene Recovery Officer to manage the office.
Drink
Wicked Weed’s month-long Appfest celebrations are culminating tomorrow, Oct. 25 with Appalachia Day. Raise a glass to regional makers of the Appalachian Artists Collective and groove to live music from the Saylor Brothers. Best of all, $1 from each pour will benefit Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.
Seasonal
Of course, you’ll need a costume to wear to the Halloween events we just shared. We think this list of costumes only Ashevillians would find scary is frighteningly accurate. Bonus points if you source the pieces from a local thrift store or secondhand shop.
Sports
Appalachian State’s Kidd Brewer Stadium is tied for No. 23 in the New York Times’ ranking of the 25 best college football stadiums in the US. As an App State alum I may be biased, but the two hour drive up to Boone for a game is well worth it for stunning views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
Pets
Your dog’s favorite event returns to The North Carolina Arboretum this weekend: the annual Halloween Dog Parade is Sunday, Oct. 26. Bring your costumed pup for best-dressed prizes, local vendors, and fall festivities in the gardens. This year’s theme is The Wizard of Paws.*

A libations legend and culinary powerhouse have joined forces for a brand new gin. Chemist teamed up with Luminosa to create Forager’s Gin, made with wild harvested ramps. Ramps have an oniony and garlicky aroma and flavor profile.
Just like Chemist suggests, you can try it out at Antidote or Luminosa in something like a Gibson or Bloody Mary.
