Primary Election Day is today, March 3, and if you weren’t one of the 30,700+ Buncombe County residents to cast your ballot during early voting, here are a few things you need to know:
Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. — if you’re in line, you will be able to vote.
Absentee ballots must be returned by 7:30 p.m.
You must go to your assigned voting location and bring a photo ID.
The City of Asheville secured $6.9 million in state and FEMA funding for Helene recovery, with more than $5 million assigned to rebuild the tipped fusegate at the North Fork Water Treatment Plant. Additional funds will repair guardrails, bridges, and local parks.
Community
Asheville was selected for the national homelessness prevention program, Right at Home, bringing $5 million to support 1,000+ households over three years. The Asheville-Buncombe Continuum of Care will administer the program, offering rapid financial aid and case management to help residents stay housed. (Asheville Citizen-Times)

Earthling Coffee announced an April 6 opening date for its Patton Avenue location, in the former Granite Depot lot across from The Freeze. The new shop will become Earthling’s flagship store, with the Candler shop closing on March 15.

A Monday, March 9 meeting invites residents to weigh in on the county’s first Pedestrian Plan, shaping safer, more walkable connections to schools, jobs, and beyond in unincorporated areas (think: Arden, Candler, Leicester). Stop by, share your experience, and help map out the path ahead.
Outdoors
The county is also seeking community input as it reimagines Owen Park, which has remained closed after sustaining extensive damage from Tropical Storm Helene. At a March 30 drop-in meeting, residents are invited to share design ideas, recreation needs, and their vision for the park’s next chapter.

After 30 years at Lake Eden, the LEAF Global Arts Festival is moving to Mills River. The October festival will be held at Deerfields, a 940-acre property with two lakes, ample camping space, trails, and fields for outdoor stages and activities. See what else LEAF has in store before the fall fest.
