The Hominy Creek Greenway is turning 15, and to celebrate, you can cheers with a beer brewed from plants foraged straight from the greenway.
The star of the night is “Knotty by Nature,” a special small-batch saison brewed with Japanese knotweed — an edible yet highly invasive plant commonly found along the creek. As Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway trustee Jack Ingleman says, “If we can’t beat it, drink it.”
There’s a new place for a pick-me-up. Woodfin Coffee Dept. is now open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving up coffee, tea, breakfast, and lunch from the cute blue building at the Elkwood Avenue intersection.

This Thursday, April 16 at 1 p.m., the WNC Nature Center will unveil the new butterfly garden, renovated barn, and expanded gift shop as part of its Gateway to the Southern Appalachians project. Wander through the garden and ask educators how to build your very own butterfly oasis at home.

Buncombe County’s population fell by roughly 1,800 residents to 277,417 as of July 2025 — its first decline in more than two decades. State demographer Dr. Mike Cline attributes the drop primarily to Helene, which both displaced residents and deterred people who had planned to relocate to WNC. (Blue Ridge Public Radio)
