On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the semifinalists for the 2025 James Beard Awards were announced, and four fine local chefs and restaurants were recognized. Let’s dig into the spots in the running for the renowned accolades.
William Dissen, The Market Place
Nominated for: Outstanding Chef
Dissen is at the helm of the farm-to-table restaurant where seasonal ingredients rule the menu. You might also remember The Market Place earning a nod for Outstanding Restaurant during last year’s semifinalist announcement. Dine on the fresh fare with a tasting menu during Asheville Restaurant Week, happening now.
Leo’s House of Thirst
Nominated for: Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program
The cozy Haywood Road wine bar secured its first nomination this year. Leo’s offers a vast wine list with selections from across the globe, plus plenty of zero-proof options — your server can help you find the best pairing to complement the excellent food menu. Pro tip: Treat yourself to the prix fixe lunch, Friday-Sunday.
Ashleigh Shanti, Good Hot Fish
Nominated for: Best Chef, Southeast
Since Shanti opened her fish fry shop a year ago, the restaurant has earned immense praise, locally and nationally. Shanti isn’t a stranger to the James Beard Awards, earning a nomination for Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2020.
Silver Iocovozzi, Neng Jr.'s
Nominated for: Best Chef, Southeast
Asheville is doubly represented in this category, with Iocovozzi earning recognition for their Filipinx cuisine with Southern flare. In 2023, Neng Jr.'s was named a finalist for the prestigious Best New Restaurant award. If you haven’t dined at the 18-seat restaurant (or just need to slurp down another adobo oyster), make a reservation.
Finalists for the awards will be announced on Wednesday, April 2, and awards will be presented during a Monday, June 16 ceremony. Psst... there are plenty more nominated restaurants worth taking a short road trip for, including several Charlotte restaurants — check out the full list.
