Hay, AVL. Looking for something memorable to do this Saturday? Grab the fam or a group of friends for a fun-filled tailgating + horse racing event, happening this Saturday, April 15.

A Western NC tradition since 1948 (with a fun history dating back to 18th century Ireland), the 75th annual Tryon Block House Steeplechase welcomes horses and jockeys from around the US to compete in four “steeplechase” races as spectators watch from the sidelines, tailgate style.

Taking place in Columbus, NC (a ~45 drive away), the event includes a host of additional activities starting at 10 a.m., including:

  • Live music
  • Parade of the Hounds
  • Kids Zone
  • Food + local merchant vendors
  • Beer garden
  • Fancy Hats & Crazy Pants contests (read: spectacular hats and outfits are encouraged)

Tickets are sold by the carload — meaning one ticket is good for up to six people, along with the car, a pop-up, and tailgate spread (pro tip: go casual or make it fancy ). Non-tailgate, per-car tickets are also available.*

Snag tickets (they’re selling quick)

She previously owned and operated Sacramento Press, but made her way to 6AM City so she could spend more time doing what she loves most: writing + editing. She also enjoys gardening, running, traveling, and doing almost any activity outside.
