Unpopular opinion: North Carolina isn’t always No. 1.

Last month, U.S. and World Report released their “Best States” rankings. Iowa, Minnesota, and Utah came in ranked 1st – 3rd, respectively. New Mexico, Mississippi, and Louisiana came in 48th – 50th.

So, where did North Carolina fall? 23 out of 50. That’s puts at the bottom of the upper half, right under Virginia, Wyoming, and Maine. And, right above Connecticut, New York, and Tennessee.

Asheville gets so many accolades for being a great place to visit + live, but we’re only as good as the state we’re in. And that state just got mid-level reviews across the board.

N.C. is #16 in education, and in the bottom half of rankings in healthcare, opportunity, and quality of life. But, in the spirit of optimism, we ranked #6 in Fiscal Stability (and no. 1 in Government Credit Score).
