  • At its Tuesday, March 28 meeting, Asheville City Council is expected to ratify the Municipal Climate Action Plan. The $95,000 plan aims to ensure city-owned assets + programs are aligned with city’s goals around climate resilience and sustainability. In practice, that means 22 recommended actions, ranging from short-term to long-term goals. (Mountain Xpress)

  • Equal Plates Project, a local nonprofit that addresses food insecurity, is expanding. In addition to its Southside kitchen, the nonprofit will also begin cooking + serving meals of out of downtown’s Central United Methodist Church. The organization’s goal is to serve 30,000 meals this year. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
  • Interested in meeting Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers? On Tuesday, March 28, 5-6 p.m., he’ll appear at LOTSAR’s Hilltop Event Center (21 Restaurant Ct.). At this Q&A session, Smathers will share his perspective on the future of Canton and how he hopes to overcome the town’s present challenges. RSVP to join.

  • Dig orchids? Then you’ll love this upcoming festival, presented by the WNC Orchid Society and NC Arboretum. The 22nd Annual Asheville Orchid Festival returns to action Saturday, April 1-Sunday, April 2. The fest features world-class orchid growers and breeders, with hundreds of orchids on display, plus other programs + learning opportunities.

  • Holeman & Finch (H&F) will host a Turkish Bake Sale on Sunday, March 26 from 10 a.m.- to 2 p.m. In collaboration with West End Bakery and French Broad Pantry, H&F’s chef de cuisine Sinem Akalin will sell traditional Turkish pastries like baklava and borek (plus, a few American staples) to support earthquake relief efforts in Turkey and Syria. Meet the 3 artists behind Buncombe’s Creative Equity Mural Project

Three buildings owned by Buncombe County are about to get the makeover of a lifetime.

As part of Buncombe’s new Creative Equity Mural Project, local and visiting artists Gabriel Eng-Goetz, Leslie Reynalte-Llanco, and Jared Wheatley will install murals focused on racial equity, reconciliation, and restoration on three blank county-owned walls.

Here are the buildings that will be painted in the pilot round of this new public art program:
  • Register of Deeds Building, 205 College St.
    • Eng-Goetz plans to gather community input to decide on his design and involve an artist apprentice.
  • Buncombe County Tax Office, 94 Coxe Ave.
    • Reynalte-Llanco will work with local artists Gus Cutty and Kathryn Crawford to install a Latino/Latin pride design with bright colors and bold Spanish text.
  • Buncombe College Street parking deck
    • Wheatley, founder of the Indigenous Walls Project, will engage the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to create a communal basket concept.
