Do you hear that? It’s laughter erupting from audiences witnessing the talented comics of Asheville’s stand-up comedy scene. Whether you want to get up on stage and share your jokes or sit back and enjoy a full belly laugh, we’ve got you covered with a guide to local comedy.

Modelface Comedy | Various locations
One of the biggest forces in the Asheville comedy scene, Modelface has a chock-full calendar of events — plus, they host recurring series like Freshen Up Open Mic at Noble, Comedy at Catawba, and Don’t Tell Comedy.

Slice of Life Comedy | Various locations
From open mics to feature comics, shows are hosted at Pulp Lounge, plēb urban winery, and Asheville Pizza and Brewing Co.

Every Wednesday at 8 p.m., folks can step up on stage for a five-minute set — sign ups begin at 7 p.m. if you plan on performing.

Speakeasy Improv | Various locations
The audience plays just as important of a role as the players do at these shows — the next event takes place this Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m. at New Belgium Brewing.

The Orange Peel | 101 Biltmore Ave.
This venue brings heavy hitters to the area, including upcoming shows from please don’t destroy of SNL fame + Gary Gulman.

Still looking for more stand-up? You’re in luck. The 15th annual Asheville Comedy Festival returns Aug. 9-12. Each night at 8 p.m., a group of comedians will take the stage at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts for the famous showcases. Secret late shows with unreleased lineups will begin at 9:30 p.m. at DSSOLVR and Catawba Brewing’s + Urban Orchard’s South Slope locations. Find tickets for individual shows or a Cosmo Pass for access to everything.

  • On Monday, July 24, Asheville GreenWorks embarked on a heat-mapping campaign to identify neighborhoods experiencing extreme heat. The map with data collected by 140+ volunteers will be released in the fall. Results will be used to inform city leaders and create resources for the most heat-vulnerable neighborhoods. (WLOS)

  • Former UNC Asheville men’s basketball player Tajion Jones has signed a deal to play for Netherlands-based basketball club ZZ Leiden. Tajion holds the title for Asheville’s all-time scoring leader, racking up 1,987 points during his college career.

  • School is back in session. In the 2022-23 school year, Hillcrest Head Start closed due to staffing shortages. The pre-K program, led by nonprofit Community Action Opportunities, announced that it will reopen for the 2023-24 school year beginning Aug. 28. (Asheville Citizen-Times)
