Tell us a tale at AVLtoday’s storytelling open mic

Usually, we’re bringing the stories to you. We’re immersed every day as we plan, write, and pop into your inbox each morning — but we’ve decided to shake things up and ask you to be the storyteller. After all, our readers are at the heart of the stories we share, and we think you deserve the spotlight.
So join City Editors Molly + Grace this Monday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. for AVLtoday’s free storytelling open mic. We’ll be taking over Highland Brewing’s Barrel Room for an evening of telling tales and sipping ales.
The night will be centered on the theme of “Pride in Place.” It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the things we wish were different (we’re guilty of the dreaded doom scroll), but this is a chance to dwell on why we love where we live. This could be a time that a local nonprofit made a profound impact, an account of finding lifelong friends in our community, a memory of Asheville that brings you joy — anything that makes you proud to be here. Stories should be under 5 minutes, but even if you’ve only got 30 seconds of material, we want to hear from you.
If you don’t have a tale of your own to tell, that’s okay too. Swing by for a listen and a drink. There’s no pressure to be at the mic — although, Highland can help if you need a little courage to get up on stage.
You can register online now, but feel free to just drop by too. We’ll have a sign-up sheet ready for last-minute stories. See you there.

What should we name our small-batch brew?
Highland Brewing is going to be serving up a special beer for our storytelling open mic, but it needs a name. We’ve narrowed down the choices, but we still need your help. Join us on Monday to see (and sip) the winner.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and 40% of students reported being bullied on school campuses in the past year. Sadly, this statistic has been steadily increasing since 2019.
Enter: Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy (CM Prep), a private, virtual charter school providing K-11 students and parents with an alternative to the traditional school experience.
“His transition was really smooth,” says Jennifer, a parent who transitioned her student to CM Prep after he experienced bullying in his previous school. “His grades have improved and he’s getting hands-on learning experiences so that he can learn at his own pace.”
For families whose students may face bullying in their schools, CM Prep counselors share these five tips:
Encourage open and honest communication with children about their experiences.
Empower students to speak up, and teach them how to identify bullying.

The votes are in for the AVLtoday Pumpkin Carving Contest. Hundreds of readers cast their ballots, and there was one pumpkin in particular that came out ahead — Mariah G.'s Sir Sumo has been crowned our winner with 45% of the vote.
This jack-o'-lantern captured the Frenchie’s smushed face perfectly, making him look extra regal in the orange glow.
Congratulations to Mariah G. (and Sir Sumo himself) as well as our finalists — you’re all the cream of the carving crop.

I love a good glass of wine, but I’m hardly a sommelier. So I was a little relieved when Crocodile Wine shared the launch of the local monthly Fangs Wine Club. I’d much rather rely on an expert selection than my usual decisionmaking strategy of finding the bottle with the coolest label.
