Exercising doesn’t look the same for everyone — what’s fun and muscle-building for one person may be a slog for someone else.

Fortunately, Asheville is home to dozens of opportunities for exercise, whether you enjoy lifting weights, dancing to hip hop tunes for a little cardio action, or boxing for a full-body workout. Use this guide as a resource for all-things fitness in Asheville.

This local club was founded in 1974 and quickly became a trailblazing institution for tennis. Over the decades it has embraced its role in the local tennis community while developing additional community offerings like fitness facilities, group exercise classes, personal training, pickleball courts, outdoor swimming pools, and more. Underground is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) gym in the South Slope neighborhood. Class offerings include AMPED (50 minutes of strength training, cardio, and functional movements), FIT (a modified version of AMPED in a small group setting), and LIFT (50 minutes of weightlifting).

Festival
  • If you’re already counting down the days to AVLFest on Aug. 1-4, we’ve got good news. The festival is continuing the Locals Only Presale, where anyone in a 75-mile radius can get tickets for $75. The sale will go live today, Friday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. and continue through Thursday, Jan. 25 at 10 p.m. Find tickets on the website or social media.

  • With cold weather forecasted for this weekend, take a look at the City of Asheville’s recommendations to prepare your home for the low temperatures (and avoid frozen pipes). The Water Resources Department advises precautions like opening kitchen + bathroom cabinet doors to allow for warm air flow and setting faucets to a slow drip.
Civic
  • As the tax deadline approaches, Buncombe County is offering free tax assistance for low- and moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention to those who are 60+. You can pick up forms and instructions at selected local libraries then make an appointment to meet with a tax aide who will prepare your documents.
Active
  • Commit to keeping active, even during the winter chill. Asheville Parks & Recreation is hosting the Fit 50 Challenge, a community-wide commitment to walk, run, or roll a total of 50 miles between Feb. 1 and April 1. If you want to go further, top finishers by total mileage will receive prizes like Beats Studio Buds. Sign up.

  • WNC Sierra Club is looking for environmentally minded WNC musicians and artists to join as special guests at the monthly Music Art & Policy events.   • If you want to get your teaching skills down to a fine art, the Center for Craft is now accepting applications for its 2024 Teaching Artist Cohort.   • Don’t miss the deadline to have your voice heard. The City of Asheville’s survey on local government will close this Monday, Jan. 22.
