Veterans Day. A ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Charles George VA Medical Center, and author + US Army CSM (Ret.) Sa’eed Mustafa will be the keynote speaker. Although city and county offices will be closed today, distribution sites and community care stations will remain open.

As of early morning on Friday, Nov. 8, turbidity in the North Fork reservoir was below 17 NTUs. The plan for treating the reservoir this week remains the same — a third round of aluminum sulfate and caustic soda is scheduled to begin this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Asheville Parks and Recreation programming is returning tomorrow, Nov. 10. There are a few limitations to events, though — cooking classes, field trips, and some outdoor events remain canceled due to challenges with potable water delivery, transportation, and inaccessible outdoor spaces. Concert
On Sunday, Nov. 17, an exciting lineup of local artists will perform at Big Love for Salvage Station, a benefit concert supporting Salvage Station employees. Make a suggested donation to grab tickets for the show at Asheville Music Hall.

The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at the Cane Creek Pool has been moved to the Asheville Mall at 3 S. Tunnel Rd., across from Bath and Body Works. The center serves as a one-stop shop to get in-person assistance from FEMA and the Small Business Administration.
Health
Dogwood Health Trust awarded Buncombe County a grant of $510,000 to establish the Ujima Collective Healing Space, which will offer recovery support and resources centered around BIPOC populations. Grant money will be used to hire two Peer Support Specialists, a Community Health Worker, and other logistical roles.

Speaking of Turkey Day, Pisgah Fitness is hosting the Turkey Delivery Dash on Tuesday, Nov. 19, where participants will embark on a four-mile run while carrying a turkey, and deliver it to 12 Baskets Cafe to be donated. Bring your own 12-15 lb. turkey — you can RSVP or join the run the day of.

Friday, Nov. 8
Homeowner Grant Program applications reopening
Buncombe County is reopening applications for the 2024 Homeowner Grant Program to give folks impacted by Helene more time to apply. The program, which offers qualified homeowners assistance for housing-related costs, is now open through Friday, Nov. 15.
Helene Recovery Grant Funds
In late October, Asheville City Council authorized the reallocation of existing city resources to fund Helene Recovery Grants through nonprofit partners. Those nonprofit partners have now been identified.
Mountain BizWorks will distribute Business Stabilization funds, currently totaling $704,000
Eblen Charities will distribute Rental Assistance funds, currently totaling $500,000
Asheville Regional Coalition for Home Repair (Habitat for Humanity, Mountain Housing Opportunities, Poder Emma, and Community Action Opportunities) will distribute Home Repair funds, currently totaling $750,000

It was beautiful seeing the community come out to support the artists of the RAD over the weekend at RADFest 1.0. If you couldn’t make it to the neighborhood’s soft opening celebration, there are still plenty of ways to support our arts community, especially as the holiday season approaches. This Saturday, Nov. 16, Pisgah Brewing is hosting its annual Holiday Craft Fair, showcasing the works of a plethora of WNC artists — the brewery will also release the Pisgah RAD Lager, with a portion of proceeds supporting the River Arts District Artists Foundation.
