A new kind of wellness space

There are two brick-and-mortar stores in the US specializing in period care products — and one of them, Period Nirvana, just opened on Haywood Road.

More than 10 years ago, Kim Rosas began blogging and sharing YouTube videos with educational content about the variety of menstrual products available. She amassed a following at a time when she says these resources weren’t so easy to come by.

It led her to founding Period Nirvana in 2020, stepping onto the scene as the first online reusable period product store. Thanks to some viral TikToks, the shop “started taking off almost right away,” said Rosas.

Period Nirvana’s wide array of products is inspired by its brand ethos, “from menarche to menopause,” and even includes an item Rosas herself helped design.

Beyond the cups, discs, books, gifts, and wellness items lining the shelves, Period Nirvana also chronicles how we entered this modern era of period products through its Menstrual Museum.

Psst... the bar is in good company as several other businesses have opened or are opening soon on the block of what used to be empty commercial buildings.

Traffic

Yesterday morning, new lanes opened up on I-26 West from Hendersonville. Now, there are four lanes from US 25 to Airport Road, three from Airport Road to Long Shoals Road, and two through the remaining construction up to Brevard Road. The openings “functionally complete” the widening project, which began in 2019.

Hi-Wire’s RAD Beer Garden was hit hard by Helene, and after months of cleanup, the brewery announced that it will be back in business in late May. Keep an eye out for more details on the hoppin’ reopening celebration.

Number

One million pounds. That’s how much food waste Asheville and Buncombe County’s Food Scraps Drop-Off program has spared from the landfill. To celebrate this feat, attend the One Million Pound Compost Celebration on Saturday, April 26 at Stephens Lee Community Center. Meet the people behind the program and take home some of the compost you helped create.

Unsure if your address qualifies? Check the maps before you fill out the interest form. Then, learn more about how the nonprofit is protecting the French Broad from rain runoff.

Holiday

Chag sameach. Passover (or Pesach) begins at sundown tomorrow, April 12, and goes through Sunday, April 20. You can help Jewish Family Services of WNC deliver Passover meals to older residents who otherwise might not be able to celebrate — learn more about the program and donate.

Is Meherwan Irani the next great travel show host? Hundreds of YouTube commenters think so. The James Beard Award-winning chef behind Chai Pani recently hosted an episode of Bon Appétit’s popular web series, Street Eats.

Released last week, the video follows the chefs at Hotel Theresa, who create Mumbai’s most famous chicken biryani for a crowd of 300 people each day. The video has racked up nearly one million views and counting, with Irani earning plenty of praise for his palpable excitement as host. “This host can talk to me about a single piece of wooden stick and I would listen excitedly,” one commenter writes.

If you’re hooked after soaking up all the culinary knowledge dropped in the video, good news. This is episode one of a handful hosted by Irani that are coming soon. In the meantime, there are plenty of episodes of Street Eats to indulge in. Pro tip: Grab some chaat while you watch.
