Development plans show that the city will transform the lot next to the Asheland Avenue ART Station into a skating rink.
The new rink is intended to fill the void left behind by the loss of the Carrier Park arena during the storm. Similar to the new Riverbend Dog Park, the rink will operate downtown until a permanent one is built — for “at least a few years,” according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
“We are also excited about the upcoming opening of a temporary skating and inline hockey rink to provide a much-needed resource and fun opportunities for our community as we continue to heal and rebuild,” Asheville Parks and Recreation (APR) Director D. Tyrell McGirt shared in a July letter to the community.
Backed by Community Block Grant Development funds and private donations, a construction contract is expected to be presented to City Council for approval on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Work could begin as early as Monday, Sept. 15.

The Gilded Age outfit on the right was worn by Edith Vanderbilt. | Photo by AVLtoday
With the season three finale of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” just behind us, you may be itching for more drama from the beguiling bygone era. Luckily, there’s plenty to learn about the Gilded Age estate right in our backyard — the Biltmore.
For today, let’s focus on the fashion. In this era, the wealthier someone was, the more often they changed clothes — meaning there were new, perfectly tailored looks for nearly every activity, from strolling the estate’s gardens to formal dinners. According to the Biltmore Estate’s archives, the Vanderbilts frequently wore clothing from French haute couture designers like Jeanne Paquin, Jacques Doucet, and the House of Worth.
Several years ago, the Biltmore tapped Oscar-winning designer John Bright (also of Downton Abbey fame) to recreate many of Edith Vanderbilt’s outfits for the estate’s “A Vanderbilt House Party – The Gilded Age” exhibit in 2019. Learn more about how the clothes were made using black and white archival photographs.
