The Mountaineer Inn is for sale after plans to transform it into an outdoor recreation-focused boutique hotel never materialized. The retro roadside spot has sat idle for several years, and recently, a Buncombe County judge ordered the owner to clean up the property after city officials deemed it a public nuisance. Meet Little Ginger, the outspoken blue puppet behind the Instagram and TikTok account Asheville Proper, sparking plenty of laughs and civic debate online. Created by resident David Mizne, the red-haired character riffs on potholes, development, and local politics from spots like Carrier Park and the old Kmart on Patton Avenue. The episode description promises “a hearty half chicken, plus a next-level lion’s mane sandwich with a kick,” from the restaurant. Asheville area appearances this season so far include Huli Sue’s, Foothills Grange, and Little Chango.

The Wrap

Speaking of Southern Living’s best cities, Charleston took home the top spot, citing its best-in-class dining scene. But thanks to a new Spicewalla collab, you won’t have to go all the way to the Holy City to get a taste. Chef Shuai Wang of King BBQ has shared his grandmother’s chili oil recipe, and I can attest that it’s some of the best I’ve had. Pick up a can of the dry mix and simply add your own oil for a spicy, sizzling condiment.
