News Notes

Environment

The North Asheville Community Center is the newest site to join the city-county Food Scrap Drop-Off program, showing off brand new bear-proof bins. Since 2022, the program has diverted more than 1.5 million pounds of food waste from the landfill. Learn how to join for free.

Film

A PBS NC documentary is in the works about local nonprofit Echoes of the Forest’s work transforming fallen trees in the wake of Helene into art pieces. The group recently launched a commission program, letting businesses, organizations, and people across the region own a piece of their story.

Learn

Summer school has never been so exciting. The summer 2026 course catalog for the Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning at Warren Wilson College is out now. The weekend and week-long courses invite adults to try out their skills in areas like foraged cooking, woodworking, ceramics, and nature writing.

Community

After Helene, neighbors showed up for each other in powerful ways. Now, the city has tapped Thrive Asheville to map grassroots response networks through a new Resilience Hub Mapping Project. The effort will identify what worked, where gaps remain, and how to strengthen community resilience daily and during an emergency.

Seasonal

After losing an hour of sleep this past weekend, it’s time to make it worth it. Now that the sun is setting after 7 p.m. again, we can spend more time exploring Asheville’s beautiful trails. If you need some inspo, our events calendar will be full of outdoor fun for the foreseeable future.

Real Estate

IG account @historicalhomes put the spotlight on a showstopping Tudor Revival home in West Asheville. Between the pointed arch door and wood panel ceiling, it’s a beautiful balance of elegance and rustic charm. It’s currently under contract, but there are more Tudor Revival homes to pursue in the city.
