It’s not any old Tuesday, Asheville. Today is International New Conversations Day, which makes it the perfect time to spark new connections in the 828. Whether you’re new to town or looking to expand your circle, here’s a few foolproof ways to make new friends in The Land of Sky.

For the athletically inclined

Asheville Sport and Social Club
This group offers recreational sports leagues + social events for adults over 21, regardless of skill level or athletic ability. Kickball, dodgeball, volleyball, and bowling are among the sports available.

Asheville Mountain Haulers
Is biking your passion? Everyone is welcome to join (or lead) the group’s social bike rides, which take place every Tuesday night around 7 p.m. in the River Arts District.

Asheville Running
Run, don’t walk, to this Facebook open forum where over 2,500 locals discuss races, group runs, and upcoming charity events. Want even more running groups? Check out our local guide.

For the more cerebral crowd

Asheville Board Game Club
The group, which mostly coordinates through its Facebook page, is a place where beginner + seasoned gamers can gather to game the time away. Local businesses Well Played Board Game Café and The Wyvern’s Tale are also good spots to strike up a conversation with fellow gamers.

Book clubs
Two of our very favorite independent local booksellers — Malaprop’s and Firestorm — offer opportunities to gather and discuss their latest reads. Pro tip: Be sure to check the deets on these groups, as the pandemic has caused some of them to pause or pivot to virtual.

For those with a servant’s heart

Volunteering offers folks the chance to meet other people while doing good things for your community. Whether you’re into helping animals, people, or the environment, most organizations need volunteers. See some local opportunities.

For those with niche interests

Try Meetup. This website enables folks to host + organize in-person and virtual events for people with similar interests, hobbies, and professions.
