A surreal new exhibition opens today in the Asheville Museum of Art. Through Monday, Aug. 19, the museum is showcasing “The New Salon: A Contemporary View,” featuring works in Pop Surrealism, street art, graffiti, and more from 70+ artists — some of whom you may recognize, like Danny Reed of Hot Stuff Tattoo or Hannah Dansie , whose work is on permanent display at Horse + Hero.
The gallery is guest-curated by Gabriel Shaffer, and was inspired by the alternative art movement spearheaded by the release of Robert Williams’ Juxtapoz magazine in 1994.
If you can wait just a few weeks (or want to come back and visit the exhibition again), the Asheville Art Museum is hosting a Community Day on Saturday, April 6 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy tours of the exhibition, tarot readings, live music from DJ Lil Meow Meow, the Makerspace: Nail Salon, and more — for free.
