Recently, reader Amy P. wrote in and asked: “What make of car is the most popular in our area? It seems like Subaru is the official car of Asheville, but is it really?”

The question piqued my interest because it came in three days after my old hoopty went to the Happy Junkyard in the Sky and before I went and bought a Subaru, a car I’d been wanting for 20+ years. Over the years, I’ve also noticed lots of Subarus on the roads in + around Asheville, and when my best friend from Atlanta visited, she hilariously asked me if Subarus were the state car of NC.

A recent look of the country’s most popular cars by insurance comparison shopping website Insurify revealed not only the most popular vehicles in America, but ranked them by state. Using their database of more than two million car insurance applications, Insufiy found that the most popular car in the country is the Nisson Altima.

The second most popular car in the US is the Honda Accord — which Insurify also ranked as the most popular vehicle in the Tarheel state. Insurify notes that there are regional differences when it comes to the most popular car by state, but interestingly, Subarus (specifically the Impreza model) only came out on top in Vermont, a.k.a., the Green Mountain State. Personally, I can’t help but wonder if its popularity in Vermont is related to its seeming popularity here in Asheville, as we are also surrounded by glorious mountains.

Alright, Asheville, now I’m turning it over to you. What do you think is the most popular car in town? Select your choice below and give us a reason why — if you want — and we’ll share the results with you tomorrow. Oh, and in case you’re in the market for a Subaru, hit up Hunter Automotive Group or Prestige Subaru (and please tell Anna I said hi).
