Downtown welcomes The People’s Place, a hub for community organizing

Organizers behind The People’s Place hope to eventually buy the building and create a museum, art gallery, and event space devoted entirely to community organizing.

Next time you’re downtown, stop by The People’s Place, a new mini museum and gift shop at 58 Broadway St., open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The People’s Place was created by educators, community organizers, scholars, and activists who envisioned a space for the community to engage in meaningful conversations around activism and grassroots organizing. More than a museum and gift shop, the storefront is a place for future events and collaborations with Asheville’s social justice ecosystem. The owners hope to eventually purchase the building to create a museum, art gallery, and event space.

The group will host its next event this Saturday, June 7, “We the People,” a collaboration with Merchants of Downtown Asheville to launch the storefront and introduce Asheville’s new Black-owned business to the neighborhood.

Here’s how you can participate:

  • Head to The People’s Place at 1 p.m. to experience the museum and gift shop, then receive a free t-shirt to customize with provided supplies.
  • Gather a group to shop local businesses along Lexington and Broadway, help boost the local economy, and spread the word that downtown is open by posting selfies on social media.
  • Once you’ve shopped ‘til you drop, head to DSSOLVR for the after party. The first 58 people to show up wearing the custom tees will receive a free beer.

Follow The People’s Place on social media for future events and organizing opportunities.
