Fun fact: Blue Azures are blue when emerging in spring but lavender when emerging in summer. | Photo by AVLtoday
Monarch migration may be en route, but a new winged species has touched down on the Asheville Butterfly Trail. Bee City Asheville’s trail of human-scale butterfly stations has a new addition — a Summer Azure at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary.
The pollinator advocate org is on a mission to install at least 10 stations across Buncombe County. All the butterflies represented will be native to WNC, and each station will include information about the history of the species, as well as a QR code to learn more about their pollination ecology, sustainability, and metamorphosis.
Blue Ridge Audubon partnered with Bee City Asheville to bring the Summer Azure to Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary to underscore the role butterfly and moth caterpillars play in feeding baby birds.

This week, the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority approved $12.4 million for eight capital projects through its Tourism Product Development Fund, supported by lodging taxes paid by visitors.
The Beacon Foundation was awarded the largest grant of $4.5 million to contribute to the creation of Beacon Park in Swannanoa. The project will transform the former Beacon Manufacturing Company (once the largest blanket manufacturer in the world) into a a hub for outdoor recreation and industry + residential and commercial uses.
Plans include outdoor bouldering walls, a one-mile paved walking loop, a 4,000-person capacity event lawn, and “the largest all-wheel bike facility of its kind in North and South America” designed by Vesolutions. The project is expected to be fully completed in June 2026.
