It’s about to get frosty. Wintry weather is headed for WNC, and while we wait for the first flakes to fall, let’s look back at some of the snowiest days in 828 history.

Here are some snowtable fast facts about Asheville’s relationship with snow days:

Heavy snowfalls Asheville experienced:

  • 18.2 in. of snow, March 13, 1993
  • 16.7 in. of snow, Jan. 26, 1906
  • 11.5 in. of snow, April 3, 1987
  • 10.1 in. of snow, Dec. 18, 2009

The snowiest calendar months for Asheville:

  • January (1.9 days average snowfall)
  • February (1.5 days average snowfall)
  • March (.9 days average snowfall)

The earliest snowfall Asheville experienced:

  • Oct. 1, 1952

The latest snowfall Asheville experienced:

Keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for extremely cold temperatures, hazardous driving conditions, and an increased risk of ice accumulation — because as history tells us, winter weather in WNC can be unpredictable.
