Today is National Kitten Day, which makes it the purr-fect time to look at ways we can help our area felines. Locally, we’re also smack dab in the middle of kitten season, aka the time of year between April + October when shelters experience overflow due to the high volume of cat litters born. In addition to ensuring cats are spayed + neutered to reduce the amount of litters being born, you can also help local kittens by participating in adoption and foster programs. Read on for more deets.

Adopt

Asheville Humane Society, 14 Forever Friend Ln.

Adopt a kitten (6 months old or less) for $50. Bonus: when you adopt two kittens together, the second kitten’s fee is waived. Adult cats (6 months and up) are $25. AHS also offers reduced-fee promotions throughout the year.

Adoption includes:

  • Spay/neuter
  • All up-to-date vaccines
  • Microchip
  • Starter bag of food

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, 31 Glendale Ave.

Adopt a kitten (6 months old or less) for $75 or an adult cat (6 months and older) for $40. The shelter recommends felines be adopted in pairs, so second cats and kittens can be adopted for free with the adoption of a first.

  • Microchip
  • Free month pet insurance through Trupanion

Can’t adopt? Foster.

  • The Asheville Humane Society provides all the necessary veterinary care for animals in its foster program, including medications, vaccinations, medical care + necessary supplies. The org also has a Facebook group specifically for its fosters. Apply to foster.


  • Brother Wolf covers medical expenses, food, and supplies for animals in foster care. Apply to foster.


  • Mountain Pet Rescue is a foster-based organization and provides medical care, food, support, and necessary supplies for pets in its care. Apply to foster.

Affordable spay/neuter services

The ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (25 Heritage Dr.) offers WNC residents low-cost services through its clinic in Asheville.
