DYK? Samsel Architects is behind the design + renovation of some of Asheville’s coolest spaces, like ENO’s modern new office. Founded in 1985, this year marks the firm’s 35th anniversary in Asheville.
We’re celebrating with a look at 5 of Samsel Architects’ most iconic projects – through the decades:
1. 1980s – 60 Biltmore Ave.
Samsel Architects’ own studio space began as two abandoned buildings totaling 18,000 sqft. Both the exterior and interior were in disrepair, and the floors had caved in.
The renovation connected the upper levels of both buildings to provide office, studio + storefront retail spaces downtown.
Samsel Architects moved into the upper level in 1987, and the project received an award from the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County.
2. 1990s – Blue Spiral 1 Gallery
Samsel Architects completed an interior renovation of two existing buildings to form Blue Spiral 1, a 14,000-sqft. fine arts and crafts gallery in the heart of downtown Asheville.
They took advantage of natural light on both the east and west sides of the building, much needed in an art gallery. A contemporary steel staircase was placed directly below large clerestory windows to connect all three levels.
3. 2000s – Lakeview Park Renovation
The owners of this 1941 Arts & Crafts home loved the style but wanted to make updates for modern living.
Samsel Architects’ renovation boasts improved energy efficiency + layout while maintaining the style + charm of the original house.
They relocated a staircase that intersected the dining room + kitchen to allow for more storage and space for family togetherness.
4. 2010s – Hammock House
Samsel Architects worked with a couple to design a modern interpretation of a farmhouse located in the foothills of North Carolina.
Behind the name: The husband’s family visits from South America bi-annually, so the house was designed to accommodate a series of hammocks, allowing everyone to stay together during a visit.
5. 2020s – Center for Craft
The National Craft Innovation Hub was created to provide office, event + gallery space for collaboration among artists, researchers, curators and other members of the community.
Samsel Architects worked closely with the Center for Craft to preserve the history of its headquarters (built in 1912) while breathing new life into the building with modern elements.
The updated 16,000-sqft. space now includes art galleries, offices, a commercial coffee bar, catering kitchen, meeting + event spaces and more. Ⓟ
